The course will present the basic ideas of supervisory control theory, as initiated at the University of Toronto in the early 1980s, and now an active research area in the control community. Topics addressed will include: 1. LANGUAGES, AUTOMATA, AND GENERATORS 2. CONTROLLABILITY AND CENTRALIZED SUPERVISION 3. DECENTRALIZED AND DISTRIBUTED SUPERVISION 4. SUPERVISION WITH PARTIAL OBSERVATION 5. HIERARCHICAL SUPERVISION 6. CURRENT DEVELOPMENTS There are no particular prerequisites, although a first course in discrete mathematics could be helpful. We shall also introduce the software package TCT, enabling computation of (relatively) small examples on a PC.
